Protect Your Skin Before Heading Out in the Summer Sun

(ARA) - Break out the patio furniture and light up the barbeque - it's time for summer entertaining! Whether you're attending a neighborhood cook-out or dolling up for a romantic evening under the stars, make sure you are protecting your skin before you head outdoors for summer fun.

If you're hesitant to go outside because you're fearful of being bitten by mosquitoes, you can put those worries to rest because now there's skin protection so light that only the mosquitoes will realize you're wearing insect repellent.

"It doesn't have to be hard to keep your skin beautiful all summer long," says Rebecca Borman, former Survivor contestant, and two-time Emmy Award-winning make-up artist on The View. "Keep your summer beauty routine low-maintenance with products like OFF! FamilyCare Smooth & Dry, which protects skin from mosquito bites and feels dry and comfortable."

In addition to putting on bug spray, she recommends ladies:

* Always protect their skin from the sun by wearing a high SPF sunblock (at least 15).

* Always stay hydrated.

* Avoid smeared make-up by wearing a weatherproof setting powder or using facial blotting tissues for quick touch ups.

Keep Your Shoes Germ-free

(ARA) - There's no denying that we pick up millions of germs each day; that's why mom always told you to wash up before dinner. But do you consider the dirt on your shoes, which alone carry hundreds of thousands of germs and bacteria and can track them everywhere you walk? So, just what are you stepping in?

On average, 421,000 units of bacteria reside on the outside of a shoe and 2,887 bacteria units can be found on the inside, a recent study, conducted by the University of Arizona and The Rockport Company, found. Some of the bacteria found include those that cause intestinal and bloodstream infections, bacterial meningitis and pneumonia.

Tava Smiley, former host of TLC's Clean Sweep, offers some simple tips to keep your footwear germ-free:

* Take shoes off before entering your home or any personal space. The study found that up to 99 percent of bacteria can transfer from shoes to uncontaminated areas.

* Wear washable shoes, such as Rockport's new Machine Washable Collection, and clean them on a regular basis. The study found that simply washing shoes with detergent reduced bacteria on a shoe by up to 99 percent. Find Rockport Washables at www.rockport.com.

Slim Down Before Swimsuit Season

(ARA) - Whether we want to be reminded of it or not, it's that time of year again. The calendar provides a grim reminder that swimsuit season is just around the corner. Inevitably, that familiar panic sets in. But getting ready to slip back into your suit and out into the sun may be easier than you think.

Before you resort to quick-fix diets and manic workouts, consider taking a step back and examining your current approach to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. "Slimming down for summer can be as simple as making some small changes in your diet," says Cheryl Forberg, R.D., author of the new book "Positively Ageless: A 28 Day Plan for a Younger, Slimmer, Sexier You" and Nutritionist to the NBC's fitness reality show "The Biggest Loser." "If you find the right healthy foods, you won't even miss the unhealthy options." Forberg offers some simple suggestions on how to prepare for the beach and maintain a healthy diet long after summer ends.

* Plan ahead
Making a healthy lifestyle change takes foresight - and commitment. That means planning all essential elements ahead of time: your meals, your snacks and your exercise.

* Don't skip meals
This is especially important when it comes to breakfast. Skipping meals will lead to overeating and poor food choices later in the day.

* Keep the flavor
Eating balanced meals and healthy snacks doesn't have to mean sacrificing flavor. A truly healthy diet can be just as delicious when you have the right foods on hand.

Want to Look Hot this Summer?

(ARA) - As summer arrives and temperatures rise, beauty routines become increasingly challenged by heat, humidity and other seasonal factors. Looking great during summer months isn't hard - it just requires smart preparation.

Celebrity makeup artist BJ Gillian and hairstylist to the stars Brett Freedman offer their top tips for looking hot this summer.

1. Shampoo smart.
"To minimize damage from over-washing hair during summer months, use shampoo sparingly and lather up the roots first to zap the sweat and oil at the base of the hair, then use the diluted suds on the ends. Use a mild shampoo to keep your locks smooth, healthy and clean without overdrying," says Freedman.

2. Wear SPF everywhere.
"Prepping your skin with the right products can make it virtually 'shine-proof,'" says Gillian. "Use a multi-tasking makeup primer like DDF Matte Finish Photo-Age Protection SPF 30, which is a great high-SPF moisturizer that dries with a matte finish. It's perfect for summer months."

3. Wear summer-friendly beauty products.
"A waterproof mascara, like CoverGirl Lash Blast Waterproof Mascara, makes all the difference in the world," Gillian says. "Pair it with a great eyeliner to get a smoky look without too much fuss, then finish the look with a dusting of bronzer and a fruity-colored gloss for a punch of color."

Wrinkles Aren't the Only Signs of Aging

(ARA) - Whether you've noticed the signs of aging in family and friends, or acknowledged how it affects your own mind and body, getting older is an unavoidable part of life. Here are some tips on how to take aging in stride and help you look and feel your youngest:

* Heart-felt: Choosing a heart-healthy diet may not only lengthen your lifespan by helping to reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes, it will also help you age healthier.

* Smile On: Tooth stains and red gums can age the appearance of your smile and impact its health. In fact, gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease that affects one out of every two adults, can be a major cause behind prematurely aging smiles. Dr. Jamie Sands, D.D.S., says, "I recommend using Crest Pro-Health toothpaste, which helps stop gingivitis before it starts and protects all these areas dentists check most -- plaque, cavities, tartar, sensitivity and stains and a power toothbrush, such as Oral-B Vitality Precision Clean, which reduces up to two times more plaque than a manual brush."

* Work It: Regular physical activity provides endless advantages -- from reducing the risk of osteoporosis to increased energy and feelings of well-being.

* Skin Deep: To maintain your youngest-looking skin, avoid deliberate sun exposure, wear protective clothing such as a wide-brimmed hat, and apply sunscreen, preferably SPF 15 or higher.

* Thought-provoking: Studies suggests that people who engage in logic-based activities, such as crossword puzzles and games that involve strategy like Scrabble or chess, are less likely to develop memory loss.

Healthy Love Life Equals Healthy Life, Research Shows

(ARA) - Moral debates about sex will probably go on as long as humans continue to engage in the activity, but the verdict is definitely in on the physical and mental health benefits of an active - and safe -- sex life.

Research shows that frequent intimacy, especially in the context of a caring relationship, extends life expectancy, enhances mental health and mitigates a host of physical ailments, from high blood pressure and cardiovascular ills to depression and incontinence.

"With all these health benefits associated with intimacy, is it any wonder that cultures around the world have always sought ways to speed arousal and enhance the experience?" asks Dr. Donald Isaac of Pharmazonelabs, a company that has pioneered arousal enhancers.

Viapren, Pharmazonelabs' successful aid, uses a fast-dissolving edible film strip to deliver a euphoric stimulant that acts on brain chemicals typically related to relaxation and positive feelings. When combined with a topical formula based on ingredients used for centuries by Asian cultures, the aphrodisiac can help put men and women in the mood for some highly healthful intimate activity.
